La Costa Resort and Spa values the safety and comfort of our guests above all else. Our campus spans more than 400 acres and we have placed the honey bee hives far from all guestrooms and public areas. Because the resort has many gardens throughout our grounds, you will continue to see bees among the flowers, but there is no noticeable difference in the number of bees around the resort since the introduction of the hives. La Costa’s hives are registered with San Diego County Agriculture Weight and Measures.
Will having two honey bee hives increase my chances of being stung while on the La Costa Resort and Spa property?
Part of La Costa’s charm is the beauty of our gardens. If you look closely, you will see bees in and around the gardens, but not in higher numbers than we’ve seen in the past.
How far away are the hives from guestrooms and resort common areas?
La Costa spans more than 400 acres and the hives are placed in a remote corner of the property, far from all guestrooms and public areas.
I/my child is severely allergic to bees. What precautions have you taken to ensure safety?
The safety and security of La Costa’s guests is overseen by our Loss Prevention department. This team is trained in basic first aid techniques and is there to assist and call for medical assistance in the event of all types of guest injury.
I live within 5 miles of La Costa Resort and Spa; should I expect to see more honey bees and am I more likely now to be stung due to the La Costa Resort hives?
Given the abundance of flowers in beautiful North County, we already have bees in the area. No difference in the number of bees is seen since the introduction of the hives.
What benefits are there to La Costa Resort and Spa adopting two or more honey bee hives?
La Costa was the first hotel to be Green Seal certified in San Diego County, an acknowledgement that we are serious about sustainability and being good corporate citizens. Providing a home for honey bees nicely dovetails with our existing green program and provides many opportunities, including: educational programs for guests, fresh honey for our culinary program, honey-inspired spa treatments, honey for retail sale, and much more.
Will the honey be for sale at your resort?
Yes, watch for the introduction of honey in La Costa’s Marketplace later this year.
