Some of the world’s best female WTA tennis players are returning to La Costa Resort and Spa starting today, July 14th through the 22nd for the Mercury Insurance Open presented by Tri-City Medical Center.
Throughout its 26 years, the Mercury Insurance Open has always had world-class players participate – and this year will be no different as top WTA stars Marion Bartoli, Dominika Cibulkova and Jelena Jankovic, along with rising American players Christina McHale, Varvara Lepchenko and Sloane Stephens, will battle for the title in Carlsbad.
Bartoli, who beat then-world No.1 Justine Henin to reach the Wimbledon final in 2007, is fresh off another big win over current world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka this spring in Miami, handing the Belarusian her first loss of 2012. The 27-year-old from France reached a career-high ranking of No. 7 in January.
Cibulkova is playing exceptionally well and recently defeated world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets to reach the French Open quarterfinals. In addition, former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, who reached the pinnacle of the sport in 2008 prior to her run to the final of the US Open will also be a strong contender for the title and will look for strong local fan support. The Serbian has a home in the San Diego area and is looking forward to playing her “home” event.
Over the course of the last year McHale has defeated then-World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 4 Petra Kvitova, Bartoli and Grand Slam Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, while rising inside the top 30 of the world rankings. She will be joined on the US Olympic team by breakout star Lepchenko, who reached the fourth round of the French Open and third round of Wimbledon to reach a career-high ranking of No. 44 in the world. Last year at the Mercury Insurance Open, Stephens reached the quarterfinals, and earlier this summer reached the fourth round of the French Open, the best Grand Slam finish of her young career.
To complement the world-class tennis, the Mercury Insurance Open will also provide a full schedule of off-court activities for everyone in the family to enjoy. On July 19, Tri-City Hospital Foundation will host “Fashion That Heals” with Saks Fifth Avenue of South Coast Plaza. The event will feature keynote speakers, cocktails, appetizers and a runway show showcasing today’s hottest designs.
In addition, VisitCarlsbad.com Kids Day on Saturday, July 14 is free to the public and invites kids to spend a fun day on the beautiful tennis club grounds of La Costa Hotel and Spa for a great day of activities on and off the court. On Wednesday, July 18, the tournament will “Celebrate Our Heroes” by recognizing veterans, military personnel, police and firemen following the first evening session match.
Single-session tickets for the Mercury Insurance Open start at just $20 and tickets to the Finals on Sunday, July 22 start at $40. For the first time ever, qualifying rounds on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15 are free for all fans. Additionally, USTA Members, Military Personnel, Students and Seniors (55+) receive a 30% discount on Grandstand tickets for all sessions from Monday, July 16- Friday, July 20.
